This style refers to a wide era of pop music...from Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Patti Page, Glenn Miller and vocal groups such as The Four Aces, The Ames Brothers, The Platters and The Four Seasons. This was the type of music that appealed to old and young alike, it was called POP. During pop’s Golden Age, the whole family pretty much liked the same songs. That’s why they called it Pop Music: It was popular, of the people. Singers packed houses across the country and with the widespread popularity of jukeboxes, radio and movies; it enabled their music, personalities and distinctive vocal styles to catapult them to superstar status. Time, it is said, is the ultimate critic...and the songs here have passed the test of time. They hold memories for a lot of people. The subject matter is mainly love, the love between two people. They are songs of romance. Many are songs of hope and optimism, songs of love on the horizon or just around the corner. Some are songs of bittersweet memories of love past and love lost. The songwriters wrote love stories with a beginning, a middle and an end. We don’t have to guess what they’re talking about. The writing is clear and to the point. Nor do we have to guess what the melody might be. It’s all about communication of emotion. These performances are not about ego, just simple emotions conveyed directly and sincerely. And that’s the word which best describes what we have here: Sincerity. It is the sincerity that gives these songs and performances their lasting value. Great songs from 1940 – 1990...fifty years of the best songs ever recorded by the original artist. |
